Why do some people feel it is a sign of weakness to seek treatment for phobias?

Reading other forums and news articles I find it staggering that many people still think that seeking help with phobias (and other mental health issues) is somehow seen as a "sign of weakness". What could be deemed weak about facing your issues and trying to regain control of your life?

If we have a physical illness we think nothing of going to the doctors and taking the medicine that they prescribe, so why is it different with phobias and mental illness? Am I missing something because I just dont get it.

Some might but I see it as a sensible move, a sign of strength. If you are ill you go to the doctors, if you need help with a phobia, go to a therapist.
