What is a phobia?

In simple terms a phobia is an irrational fear of a situation or some thing - phobias seem to "trick" your mind and your body into thinking you are in great danger when this is not the case. The fear of what "might" happen prompts anxiety and our "fight or flight" automatic protection system kicks-in.

Where there is no real danger, or a danger we can overcome, our body would normally prompt us to fight and battle through the situation. If someone is suffering from a phobia their "flight" scenario will kick-in and they will do whatever it takes to get out of the situation - however irrational the fear may be. This irrational fear seems very very real at the time - pumping hearts, sweaty hands and growing anxiety which can often bring on a panic attack.

(Even just writing this brings back memories of my phobia and panic attacks but thankfully I know how to control them now)
