Why do phobia sufferers tend to have more than one phobia?

If you speak to someone who suffers from a genuine debilitating phobia many seem to suffer from more than one phobia. This begs the question, what is the underlying reason for phobias and if you suffer from one phobia does this make you more susceptible to others?

I think the major factor in phobia is anxiety. I think that when someone suffers with one phobia they usually suffer with others because of this. This brings up a good question actually instead of me trying to tackle each one of my phobias separately and treating them differently perhaps I should concentrate on controlling my levels of anxiety as this may help me combat the underlining issue of my phobias as a whole. Has anyone else took this approach or think this may work? Any feedback would be very much appreciated :)
