How can things change so quickly?

My fear of flying is fairly strange to say the least because the first time I flew I absolutely loved it. This was many years ago and only after the journey did I find out that the turbulence we experienced was extremely strong. However, once I started to have panic attacks it then developed into a fear of flying which I can only assume is in some way connected?

How did I go from enjoying flying in the early days to a terrifying fear at the height of my panic attacks?

It’s interesting that you didn’t realise the turbulence was strong until after your journey so that makes me wonder if you associated the turbulence as danger so felt your plane journeys weren’t as safe as you at first thought? After experiencing panic attacks I suppose you get a heightened feeling of panic and terror so perhaps you are thinking more about the ‘ dangers’ of flying now.

Is this anything to do with a fear of enclosed spaces?

Something must have been triggered in your brain or it may be another phobia, such as a phobia of enclosed spaces, kicking in?
